"What we have now is a shift to transformational moment in human history, that is similar in scope and magnitude to two previous revolutions [agricultural and industrial], and that [latter revolution] took centuries… This is the third revolution of comparable magnitude. Lester Brown called it the environmental revolution, and the ecological revolution. Dana Meadows called it the sustainability revolution. But more and more of us are simply calling it the Great Turning. This revolution has to happen much faster, and at the same time has to be more thorough-going. It's a whole mindset of who and what we are in relation to the planet, [embracing] that we are part of a living planet. It is the transition from the industrial growth society to the life sustaining society."

– Eco-Philosopher Joanna Macy on The Great Turning video

Mendocino Coast Transition Towns organizes the community along the Mendocino Coast to raise the level of awareness about the need for citizen action to create a thriving community that is both local and ecologically sustainable, as well as resilient in the midst of many upcoming changes.

Building on and incorporating the work that's already been done by the community, we bring people together to work collectively on projects in response to peak oil, climate change, species extinction, toxic pollution, the unreliability of the food system, and the fragility of our financial system.

We create, and periodically update, a new shared vision for a local, sustainable, and resilient economy. We inspire and organize the community to join us in working on projects which manifest this same vision.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

– Margaret Meade

"Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul."

- Edward Abbey (environmental writer)
